Band :

An unusual Hawkwind album in that it features a female lead vocalist, and, I think, a successful experiment. Bridgett has a good Hawkwind voice and certainly adds a different dimension. Pity it only lasted one album.

Bandits opens with the rocky Images, which moves on at a fast pace, slows down to a synth section but goes back to its original rocky pace again.

Black Elk Speaks features a spoken vocal from John G. Neihardt from the Ogala Sioux Reservation Foundation over the top of a driving Native American pounding rhythym, which moves into Bridgett and a dreamy guitar piece. Peaceful, man.

Wings is about birds and has a dreamy synth background, and reminds me of the Levitation album.

Out of the Shadows is another fast-paced tune, featuring Brock on vocals. Sounds like Huw Lloyd-Langton is in there, because of the penetrating guitar lead, but it must just be Brock learning a new trick.

That segues into Realms, a synth piece in Hawkwind tradition, featuring lots of knob-twiddling. Very much like Tangerine Dream. Which itself fades into Ship of Dreams, opening with a pounding drum beat and Brock vocal, and building with synths and violin. It's one of those Hawkwind tracks that seem to have everyone doing their own thing but each building on the other.

The final track starts as a mish-mash of sounds (drums, synths, tv soundtrack) but slowly develops form as the synths take the lead. The 'suicide' of the title occurs in the middle of the track, which then features a synth piece over lots of 'watery' and 'choral' sounds.

Overall, I like this album, but it does disappoint in some ways. Other than the two opening tracks Bridgett doesn't feature at all, and, in fact, never again. I think it was an experiment that worked, and I would have liked to have seen more use made of her. The other is that the vocals are very muddled on this offering, and it's sometimes very hard to make out the lyrics. Not enough reason to stop you buying it though.
